Scene: The Scorched Wastes
The air shimmers with heat, the desert sun baking the cracked earth. Around Kratos, the remnants of his Spartan detachment tend to wounds or pile the dead—half his men lost to a surprise ambush. A captured tribal scout kneels in the sand, hands bound, his face painted with ash symbols. Kratos' armor is smeared with blood and dust, his eyes blazing with a mix of fury and simmering shame.

Kratos (looming over the scout, voice low and dangerous):
"You fight like jackals, not warriors. Hiding in rocks. Striking from shadows. Where is your honor?"

Scout (spitting sand, grinning defiantly):
"Honor? Your men's bones will bleach in this sun, Spartan. What good is honor to them now?"

Kratos seizes the man's collar, hauling him upright. The scout's amulet—a carved desert viper—clatters against his chest.

Kratos: "You think your tricks make you strong? You are rats scurrying from true battle."

Scout (laughing sharply):
"You march in your pretty lines, clanking like temple bells. The desert whispers where you'll step next. You fight it as much as us."

Kratos freezes. His grip tightens, but his eyes flick to the horizon—dunes stretching endlessly, swallowing the tracks of the tribesmen who'd vanished like ghosts after the ambush. He releases the scout abruptly, letting him crumple to the ground.

Lieutenant (stepping forward, spear leveled at the scout's throat):
"Let me cut his tongue out, General. His lies poison the men's resolve."

Kratos (raising a hand, staring at the scout's amulet):
"...No. He speaks truth."

The lieutenant hesitates. The Spartans nearby exchange uneasy glances. Kratos crouches, eye-to-eye with the scout, his voice a blade pared to a cold, quiet edge.

Kratos: "Your people. How do you cross the wastes without waterskins?"

Scout (narrowing his eyes): "You think we'd share our secrets with a statue who can't bend?"

Kratos (snatching the viper amulet, snapping its cord):
"You will. Or I'll have your kin's bones pick this desert clean."

The scout's bravado cracks. He glances at the amulet in Kratos' fist—a tribal heirloom—then swallows hard.

Scout: "We… follow the viper's path. Where it nests, water lies beneath the sand. Dig at the rocks it suns on."

Kratos (standing, turning to his lieutenant):
"Hubris blinds. We called these savages, yet they read this land like a scroll. We march as if this were the Peloponnese."

Lieutenant (bristling): "We are Spartans! We do not skulk like—"

Kratos (slamming the amulet into the man's chest):
"We will. Strip your armor. Bury the dead in the dunes. We move at moonrise—when the vipers hunt."

The lieutenant pales but nods. As the men disperse, Kratos stares at the scout, who watches him with grudging curiosity.

Scout: "...You'll die out here anyway, Spartan. The desert hates your kind."

Kratos (sheathing his blade, his voice iron):
"Then I'll learn to hate it back."

The scout's smirk fades as Kratos walks away, already studying the serpentine patterns in the sand.
