Stateless Address Autoconfiguration

Definition

This is a method in IPv6 that allows devices to automatically configure their own unique IP addresses without the need for a DHCP server or manual configuration.

How does it work?

  1. Router Advertisement - Routers on network periodically send out Router Advertisement (RA) messages. These messages contain important information like the network prefix and prefix length.
  2. Interface Identifier Generation - Device generates a unique Interface Identifier (IID). usually derived from its MAC address.
  3. Address Combination - Device combines the network prefix from the RA message with its own IID to create a unique IPv6 address.
  4. Duplicate Address Detection (DAD) - Before using the address, the device performs DAD to ensure no other device on the network is already using the same address. It does this by sending out neighbor solicitation messages and waiting for a response. If no response is received, the address is considered unique and can be used.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages Disadvantages
Reduced administration - No need for manual configuration or DHCP server management. No centralised control - No server tracks address assignments, which can make it difficult to manage and troubleshoot the network.
Scalability - Easily accommodates large number of devices. Limited information - Does not provide DNS server address and that needs to be obtained through other means.
Plug-and-play - Devices can join the network and obtain an address automatically.

Use Cases

SLAAC is useful for scenarios where:

SLAAC is often used in conjunction with DHCPv6 to provide a complete set of network configuration information to devices.
